Wow..where is this tree? THanks again for all the information you share..it is helpful to me…I’m still learning about the area.

    • That tree is in Vanderbilt Lakes. It’s an odd time of year for a blossom. They were done months ago. When I took the picture a pedal fell off. The north side of West Terry Street in front of Bonita Fairways is lined with Hawaiian Orchid Trees, both white and pink.

It’s July and we are in our rainy season down here in the sub-tropics of Bonita Springs.

Rolling gray clouds, heavy rains, big time boomers and flashy flamboyant strikes of lightening perform daily. For all those who pay attention.

I think this to be the most splendid of Florida’s seasons. For I’ve loved rain since playing in the overflowing downspouts of our little home in Portage, Michigan. Mom would let us tykes take off our clothes to freely run and play in the rain. Of course, that was if there wasn’t any lightening. Silly fun times! How far different times were back then.

Now, what seems like lightning years later, living here in Bonita Springs, we take great pleasure from the performing flora and fauna. It is all around, for those who pay attention.

In our front yard, here on Paradise Road, we have an enthusiastic orchid tree, who has proven to us over and over again that she loves life and has shown us thru the years that she is quite a little show off.

Over our years together, we have witnessed her being dangerously injured by two lightning bolts. We watched her as she sacrificed two of her best sturdy branches to Zeus, the God of lightning. But each time she struggled back, continuing to live and blossom. Defying that mighty God of lightning. Remaining tall and showering all, who pay attention, to a very special queenly orchid show. She can be profuse!

Wicked hurricane Wilma knocked her impressive little soul to the ground, showing everyone her earthy roots. We looked desperately for help for her, needing someone to help right her back up into her hole home.

Neighbors remarked that she would not live and offered help to cut her up and haul her away. But our hearts knew her spirit. We knew she was not ready to give up life.

Then, as if having stored up nourishment from all of the God of God’s white lightning strikes, and with her branches sprayed all over the ground, her buds began. And on the very day help arrived to fully right her back into her warm root hole home, our little showoff sent forth a most remarkable array of purple blossoms. She sent orchids galore to show us her undying spirit. Surely she was exclaiming her thank you to all. Thank you to all who pay attention!
